What is Web Hosting?

What is a Domain Name?

Q: What is Web Hosting?

A: Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that you may publish your web site online. You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives you complete control over your site contents.

Q: What is a Domain Name?

A: A domain is your identity online. It separates you from everyone else - once yours, as long as you keep renewing it, no one else may have it. There are two parts to a domain – the domain name itself, and the TLD (top level domain) extension. The most popular TLD is the .com extension – it is synonymous with online business. But due to its popularity, getting a good domain name with '.com' is hard - most have been bought and are not available.

A: You may log into cPanel by typing either of the following into the address bar of your browser: http://www.your_website.com:2082 or http://www.your_website.com/cpanel (replace your_website.com with your domain name). You will be asked to login with your cPanel username and password.

Q: What mail server settings should I use?

Q: When is my billing date?

A: Each client is billed on the anniversary date of when they signed up.

Q: What if I don't pay my bills?

A: After 14 days from due date account will be suspended until all invoices are paid. After 60 days account will be terminated.

Q: What Directory names should I not use?

A: As you set up your site you will need to decide where to put different files and how to organize your directories. There are a couple of directory names you should not use. Apache is the server level program responsible for displaying webpages. Within the configuration file for Apache there are a couple of Aliases that it uses for directories. These are /manual/ and /icons/. Because of this you should not use these names for any directories. If you have a file called mypage.html in a directory called /manual and type in http://yourdomain.com/manual/mypage.html then Apache will look it's own directory for mypage.html and since there is no page with that name there it will return a 404 Page Not Found Error. The same would be true for /icons/mypage.html or /icons/myimage.gif. The solution is to use a different name for these directories, perhaps mymanual or myicons.
